John Reese

appearance
John Reese carries himself calculatedly, with the confidence of someone who knows exactly how they're moving at every moment. He stands not at attention, but almost stiffly. John rarely emotes, and when he does it's always for a purpose, with the exception of showing his emotions to people he truly trusts.

name: John Reese
canon: Person of Interest
age: 40
canon point: 3x06 "Mors Praematura"
history: POI Wiki
abilities: John spent 17 years in both the army and CIA and has learned many skills from that era.
personality: John is a man of mystery to most and likes to keep it that way. He gives away as little as possible and takes as much as he can: whatever gives him an advantage, whether it be information, munitions, or otherwise. John's first evaluation of everyone is how good of an asset they'll be for him, what he can get out of them, and how little he can give them in exchange. This is the behavior that was trained into him by the CIA and something he carries with him even after leaving their service. Very little seems to affect him, his calm and somewhat serious demeanor rarely shaken, though sometimes he might show a carefully calculated smile when it suits the situation. But he harbors strong emotions under that carefully calculated exterior.
His primary vice is loyalty and trust. Without pledging his loyalty to something John feels lost, adrift. Without having something to trust he feels empty and alone. The CIA held and broke both of those things, in small steps and then in one fell swoop, leaving John to drink himself to death after realizing his loyalty had cost him the life of his ex-girlfriend. These are both things that he subsequently gains from Harold Finch, who gives him new life and purpose. Harold gives him a cause to be loyal to: saving people in danger; and also over their many missions they build trust in each other, John finding himself with a partner that becomes part of him. John is very slow to build meaningful trust, something that the CIA broke in him, but once someone gains his trust he won't betray them. Part of the reason why John finds it so easy to follow Harold (and why he sometimes found it very hard to follow the CIA) is that he wants to do good. He wants to be a hero, to protect people. He believes that this is what he owes the world, both because it's right and because he needs to repent for all the things he did in the CIA. In the very core of his heart John holds so much love, he's just plastered over it so many times that it rarely shows. These defenses are necessary to both protect himself and help him be good at his job.
Over the seasons John demonstrates repeatedly that these defenses have caused him to have a nearly complete emotional detachment from his own feelings. In particular he almost never talks about anything he feels, and when he does it's usually in a flippant manner, like he wants the other person to guess if he means it or not. Grief especially is something he has little ability to process, choosing to run away from his feelings, whether that's into a drink, into revenge, or onto a plane. His fear of grief causes him to push people away and not let them get close to him, though he's usually ultimately unsuccessful in accomplishing this.
Despite all this John does make hard choices. He choses to hurt people and sometimes kill them. He tries to do it for good reasons, and those good reasons mostly don't let him lose sleep over his actions. But despite being an ex-CIA assassin he puts a lot of effort into these good reasons, into using his skills to punish the bad and save the good and innocent. He doesn't enjoy killing and does his best to avoid lethality, but accepts that sometimes these exchanges of life have to be made.
